DOWNTOWN PARKING GARAGES NOW AUTOMATED
State College Borough has converted all three downtown parking garages to a fully-automated "cashier-less" system.
Beginning, March, 2006, the downtown parking garages are open 24 hours per day. The Borough has installed all new "pay on foot" equipment allowing customers to pay for their parking before returning to their vehicles. In addition, all three garages now have two exit lanes allowing customers to exit the garage quickly. The machines accept coins, bills and validated tickets. The cost remains at $.75 per hour with a maximum charge of $12 per 24 hour period.
There will be customer service representatives on hand at all garages to help customers with the new system.
The system works like this:
- You receive a ticket when you enter the garage.
- When you are ready to leave, you go to one of the three locations where you insert the parking ticket into the "paystation" that will tell you how much you owe.
- When the fee is paid the ticket is encoded with the proper information and returned to the customer. There is a 15-minute grace period from the time your ticket is returned until you must exit the garage.
If a customer takes more than 20 minutes to return to their car, the gate will not open and they will have to pay for the additional time.
- Upon leaving the garage, the ticket is inserted in a ticket reader at the exit gate, and the gate is lifted. The machine at the gate retains the ticket.
