When Philadelphia Runner, the headquarters of the Philly running community, started looking at options for expanding across Pennsylvania, the first instinct was to look for a location in Pittsburgh. However, when an opportunity for space became available in downtown State College the company decided to bring the business to central Pennsylvania. “Everything fell into place with this location,” said manager Anne Williams, “and it’s been great to see the community response.”
Anthym has a twist on the fresh business methods of the original stores. While the store carries everything the causal runner or marathon trainer needs, their shelves are stocked with gear for a variety of activities across a broad fitness spectrum. The shop sells everything from sneakers and active wear to yoga mats and specialty socks. Big name brands such as Nike and Adidas definitely have their place in the store. It’s the items from smaller brands such as Ciele, a hat brand that is slowly making its way into the United States, and ALO, a specialty yoga outlet, that create Anthym’s diverse and original vibe. For Williams this is key because the distinctive, boutique feel is a perfect fit with her love of yoga.
Anthym is constantly looking for new ways to foster community and encourage people to discover the many adventures of running and fitness. The store often teams up with other local businesses to generate fun events like “Ladies Night,” complete with bra fittings, wine tastings, prizes, and other exciting features. They also have hosted documentary style film nights in the store, showing unique runner stories, and hope to have massage and physical therapists come in for demo nights. Anthym aims to host events that are almost always free!.
Beyond the walls of the store, the Anthym team has sponsored the Nittany Valley Half Marathon, Nutrition Habit Challenge and other health and wellness initiatives. Williams said that they are always looking for engagement with the community to give everyone more than just a place to shop, but an experience. Anthym makes running fun with friends on Wednesday night three mile runs followed by yoga back at the store. The store also gears up for 10 mile runs monthly, for more experienced runners.
Anthym, located at 228 E. College Ave, is open Monday through Saturday, 10-8 and Sunday, 11-6. Call them at 814-308-9196 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org for information. Make sure to check out their website, www.anthym.com, and follow them on Facebook for upcoming events!
