Accidents of Being

based on the poetry of Mary Rohrer-Dann

adapted for the stage by Cynthia Mazzant

at The State Theatre

April 1-2, 2016

“Mold speckles the gilt mirrors and paintings.

The museum rooms echo and sigh.

A lone librarian dusts unopened books…”

A trunk discovered in a suburban Philadelphia estate and museum reveals a treasure trove of letters, journals, keepsakes, & poems, from 150 years of neighborhood residents. From the railroad tycoon whose ancestor came over with William Penn, to the housekeeper who married his only heir and left the estate to the people of Philadelphia.  From a fugitive slave passing through while hidden in a casket, to immigrants from war-ravaged Europe, children who view the wooded park as a wilderness of dreams, frontier of possibility, farmers, factory workers, homemakers, artists, schemers, and one or two ghosts.  We hear their voices in Accidents of Being.
