The ribbon cutting ceremony celebrates the completion of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza, a memorial to remind citizens of Dr. King’s legacy as an advocate for peace, equality, and justice — a legacy that lives on in the State College community and around the world.

The Borough of State College and the MLK, Jr. Plaza Committee are presenting a very special event, including brief remarks to be delivered by Dr. Preston N. Williams, Houghton Professor of Theology and Contemporary Change Emeritus, Harvard Divinity School.  Dr. Williams was the associate chaplain at Pennsylvania State University at the time of Dr. King’s visit, and the second African American professor to be hired by Penn State.

Please join us for the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on August 28, 2017, the 54th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. King first gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza is located on South Fraser Street between West College Avenue and West Beaver Avenue.
